Conservative MEP Amjad Bashir spoke of his sadness at news that Bradford Bulls had gone into liquidation.
The MEP for Yorkshire and the Humber said: "As someone brought up in Bradford I know how much this club means to people in the city and across the world.
"They are iconic in rugby league, and as Bradford Northern represent one of the game's most historic names.
"I dearly hope this is not the end of the story and that a way can be found to re-establish the club with a clean slate. We need that for the sake of the staff, the players, the city and the fans. If I can help in that process I will."
